Vagina monologues.

Friday, August 27th
Pati de les Magnòlies, Generalitat building in Girona, 9 pm.

Synopsis

Eve Ensler wrote the first version of this play in 1996, after interviewing more than two hundred women about sex, love affairs, and domestic violence. The interviews began as casual conversations with her friends, who told her anecdotes they had heard from other friends, and so began the chain of stories that gave rise to the play.

The monologues seek to “celebrate the vagina”, describing it as superior to the male penis, since it is connected to the clitoris, the only human organ that has no other purpose than to give pleasure. When it premiered in New York it was performed by a single actress: the author herself, who gave life to a dozen characters who told her stories. The age, attitude and mood of the characters vary, but all the monologues are related to the vagina, whether they are about sexuality, menstruation, masturbation, orgasm, childbirth, rape or genital mutilation.

Brief history of the group

El Casino de Calaf itself is celebrating 125 years of history this year. Nevertheless, this theatre group is only three years old, after the Casino de Calaf was reborn and revived on stage. Both the actresses and the director have many years of experience in the theatrical world, as Calaf is a theatrical town par excellence.

This group has only performed two plays so far, but with great success. La casa de Bernarda Alba [The House of Bernarda Alba] and The Vagina Monologues, although over the last twenty years many of the actresses, together with the director, have participated in plays such as 12 Angry Men, An Enemy of the People, and Band of Brothers, among many others.
