ENEMIGO DEL PUEBLO

To pass judgment on God? It’s ridiculous, funny, disrespectful to some, cartoonish, crazy and strange, very strange. And to make matters worse, it was a real event, the trial was held at the time, with all the real components of a trial, except for the defendant, of course, who did not appear. Could there be anything more surreal than this trial? That is why De la Burla represents this madness, the challenge of the absurd invokes us. At the heart of the company’s identity is a drive to present critical reflections to the public, in this case a bold criticism of religion, blind beliefs, imposed, absurd and hardly credible traditions, especially when delivered through humour, one of the best ways to soften the blow of an uncomfortable truth. Ridiculing what is already ridiculous in itself is stretching things even further.

De La Burla Teatro was founded in 2007 in Caceres. The company currently has the plays Enemigo del pueblo and Brujas running. Enemigo del pueblo, directed by Esteban G. Ballesteros, premiered in 2023, was the winning text for the Fatex 2022 theatrical texts awards. The author, Florián Recio, is known in Extremadura above all for his famous work Los gemelos, adapted from the text by Plautus. Throughout its history, De la Burla Teatro has maintained its own identity, taking advantage of laughter and smiles to claim women’s equality, their freedom and their social and professional recognition.
