Mademoiselle Julie (‘Miss Julie’) by August Strindberg is one of the key texts in the genre of bourgeois drama. It is the most celebrated work of one of the great writers of the 19th century; a milestone in Scandinavian literature and, broadly speaking, one of the great literary works of the universal canon. In addition to all this, and above all, it is a radically contemporary text that brings to the table topics such as power roles, gender and class struggle, sexual tensions, adolescent identity and the emerging femininity of one of the great heroines of universal theatre. Julie, the daughter of a count and a spoiled child, goes down to the kitchen on a party night. The conversation she has with Jon, an attractive servant, and the fact that she mixes with the staff, realising who she really is and succumbing to her own desires, make this St John’s night an obvious turning point in Julie’s life. From the very first minute, one character who is inevitably heading towards the abyss, sets the tragic machinery in motion with one of the most brilliantly written dialogues in the history of literature.

Amfiteatre

Amfiteatre is a theatre company specialising in classical text theatre, and it is famous in Sabadell for how it connects with young people. They have performed Shakespeare, Ibsen and Sophocles with critical and public success, and have reached various points in the Vallès and in Barcelona. Their goal is to stage sophisticated theatre and promote great authors from an early age, therefore, almost unintentionally, engage young audiences. Now it’s Strindberg’s turn.
