A Peeling tries to emotionally capture the deep connection between personal pain, collective trauma and the search for hope. The act of peeling becomes a meditative ritual about pain.
The reference to the potato, in relation to people, evokes a sense of vulnerability — a shedding of outer layers that reveals the rawest essence of humanity —, complemented by the moving music of Elgar’s Cello Concerto.
The lack of identity is reflected in faceless figures. The physical connection between the dancers gives life to an emotional narrative about resilience. The intertwining of arms and legs suggests the act of interweaving pain and the potential to become a unity.
Friedland’s choreography, in harmony with Oded Ronen’s dramatic sensitivity, transcends mere performance to become a collective act of memory and healing and the search for a “silent language of connection”. The creative decision to merge the act of peeling with dance and music transforms an everyday gesture into a profound testimony of survival and hope.
