The Last Night of Socrates

The Last Night of Socrates, by Bulgarian author Stefan Tsanev, is an emotionally charged story about human conscience, duties, and the price of freedom. The characters’ conversations prompt reflection on the causes of fear, hatred, and war —which are also relevant and terrifying in the current world situation— as well as the transformations of human personality influenced by power and circumstances.

To emphasize the relevance of the play’s events in relation to current global political developments, the visual imagery was deliberately created in a conventional way, free from period influences.

Founded in 1946, the Student Theatre of the University of Latvia has a long tradition. Since 1993, it has been led by artistic director Visvaldis Klintsons, who has staged numerous productions across various genres. The Student Theatre has been recognized with numerous awards and distinctions over the years, and its plays have been performed both in Latvia and internationally. The company regularly participates in the annual Latvian amateur theatre competition and various local and international festivals and events.
